The Department of Chemical Engineering belonging to the Faculty of Chemistry and Biology at The Norwegian University of Science and Technology announces 4 vacant professorships/assistant professor in Chemical Engineering.

The Department presently has 12 Professors, 4 Assistant Professors, 7 Adjunct Professors, 9 technical/administrative porsitions and about 55 Ph.D. students. The Department is organized in six research groups; Separation technology, chemical reaction engineering, process systems engineering, pulp and paper technology, polymer chemistry as well as catalysis and petrochemistry.

The Department is going through a period with large changes in its academic staff, and we are looking for four top qualified coworkers.

Professor/Assistant Professor in Separation Technology ref.no KB 11/00

Responsibility for teaching and research in the area of separation technology with emphasis on processes for purification and separation of gases including, for example, unit operations such as absorbtion, membranes, cyogenic distillation and others.

Professor/Assistant Professor in Process Systems Engineering ref.no. KB 48/99

Responsibility for teaching and research in the area of systematic methods for design, operation and optimization of integrated process plants.

Professor/Assistant Professor in Polymer Chemistry ref.no. KB 47/99

Responsibility for teaching and research in the area of polymer chemistry, with special responsibility for areas related to industrially important bulk polymers. The relationship between the production process, polymer structure and polymer properties are central, including the characterization of polymers.

Assistant Professor in Catalysis and Petrochemistry ref.no. KB 49/99

The candidate should preferably have knowledge about the characarterization og porous materials and studies of solid surfaces, in addition to a general background in catalysis and reaction kinetics.

(In addition, we will within the next two months announce a fifth Professorship in Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics).

For all the positions it is desirable with experience from problems of industrial relevance.

For the three positions announced as professor/assistant professor, the applicant is requested to state whether he/she also is interested in the position as assistant professor, in case the applicant is not found competent as professor. Those interested only in a position as assistant professor are requested to state this in their application.

The following applies to the positions as professor:

The successful applicant for a professorship must able to document his/her extensive disciplinary qualifications in important fields within the discipline. His/her individual work must document scientific expertise in one or more parts of the discipline, particularly the specialist fields the Professorship has specific responsibility for. Weight will be placed on the ability to supervise and initiate research and development work.

Weight will be placed on pedagogical skills. The evaluation of the candidate will be based on documented pedagogical material, including pedagogical education/training, the presentation of academic work, experience from supervising masters-level students and doctoral candidates, and teaching as well as other pedagogical matters. The evaluation will consider both the quality and the scope.

The professor is to be jointly responsible for disciplinary matters together with other academic staff in the Department. The Professor is required to participate in teaching activities in accordance with the relevant curriculum and assist in further developing the teaching programme, including continuing education. The Professor is to supervise masters students, research fellows and doctoral candidates in his/her discipline. The Professor must agree to participate in administrative work.

The Professor is obliged to follow the regulations that concern changes and developments within the disciplines and /or the organisational changes concerning activities at the University.

The position as professor is remunerated according to wage levels 59 to 74 on the Norwegian State salary scale, with gross salary from NOK 383.831,- to NOK 513.831,- a year. Professorships are normally remunerated at wage level 59.

The following applies to the positions as assistant professor:
The assistant professor is required to participate in teaching activities in accordance with the relevant curriculum, and to participate in examination work without any distinct remuneration. The assistant professor has a right and a duty to engage in research work within his/her discipline, and is also required to participate in administrative work.

The successful applicant must be able to document scientific expertise at a minimum level of a doctoral degree. It is an advantage with documented research expertise in the dicipline.

The position as assistant professor is remunerated according to wage levels 49 to 61 on the Norwegian State salary scale, with gross salary from NOK 320.131,- to 398.331,- a year. Assistant professors are normally remunerated at wage level 49.

The following applies to positions as professor and assistant professor:

Academic staff who are employed without having a fomal qualification in university-level teaching and are unable to document equivalent qualifications, are required to successfully complete a recognized course that gives a pedagogical qualification in university-level teaching with two years of taking the appointment. The University offers such courses.

It is assumed that newly-employed staff academic positions who do not already master a Scandinavian language are to obtain within three years knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language at an equivalent standard to level three in the Norwegian for Foreigners courses provided at the Department of Applied Linguistics. The University provides such courses.

The applicants that have been short-listed will be invited for interviews and a demonstration of their pedagogical ability, usually in the form of a trail lecture.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants.
